Cagliari 2-0 Juventus

Juventus fell eight points behind Inter Milan after going down to their second away defeat of the Serie A season at Cagliari.

Nene opened the scoring after half an hour with substitute Alessandro Matri claiming the winner at the death as the hosts climbed to seventh.

It concluded a miserable week for Juve who were beaten by Bordeaux in midweek with the result putting their Champions League progress in doubt.

Juve were the first to show, Mohamed Sissoko controlling a ball out of defence but he failed to test the Cagliari goal with his shot.

The hosts then spurned a good chance when Jeda dribbled past Fabio Cannavaro on the right and crossed into the area where Andrea Lazzari was free.

His header had little conviction and the chance was missed.

Cagliari were then denied a clear chance in front of goal when the referee stopped play at the edge of the area following a foul on Andrea Cossu despite the ball going to Jeda who was well placed.

However, the hosts' aggressive intent was rewarded after 30 minutes when Nene scored an impressive goal, his right-footed shot from just outside the area sailing into the top corner despite Gianluigi Buffon's best efforts.

Juventus were struggling to find any way through the Cagliari midfield with the hosts positive, quick and creative going forward and the defence easily managing to repel Juve's attacks.

In response, the visitors never really looked like threatening until they almost equalised four minutes into the second half with a rare fluid move,

Amauri netted with a diving header from a cross by Martin Caceres but the goal is ruled out for offside.

Juve were then grateful to Caceres with the Uruguayan tracking back after Cagliari threatened to outnumber the Turin team on the counter-attack.

Cagliari launched another attack which saw Cossu head the ball forward to Matri in the area but the striker just failed to connect and the ball went out.

There was still just one goal separating the teams, though, and Juve finally began to apply some serious pressure. With 10 minutes to play they came close to an equaliser.

Diego crossed into the middle of the area where the ball was helped on by a bicycle kick from Alessandro del Piero before Cristian Molinaro unleashed a goalbound volley which was deflected by Francesco Pisano for a corner.

A minute later and Juve threatened again, Del Piero sending in a free-kick and Giorgio Chiellini just failing to connect.

And the title contenders were made to pay a minute from time when Cagliari set off on a counter-attack with Matri dribbling first past Cannavaro and then rounding goalkeeper Buffon to score the match-clinching goal.

Cagliari were thoroughly deserving of the victory, which sees them climb to within three points of third-placed AC Milan, but Juventus' title hopes took a severe blow.
