Hull City 2 Wolverhampton Wanderers 2

The Premier League game between Hull City and Wolverhampton Wanderers at the KC Stadium on Saturday Jan 30 2010.

It was a case of Hull City shooting themselves in the foot not once but twice as they wasted a glorious chance to climb above Wolverhampton Wanderers and out of the Premier League relegation zone.

Phil Brown's side have now gone nine games without a win after twice taking the lead Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Stephen Hunt's penalty only to carelessly surrender their advantage with Anthony Gardner proving to be the villain of the peace for Hull with an own goal before inadvertently playing a key role in Matt Jarvis's equaliser.

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink had put Hull on course for what would have been their first league victory since Everton were beaten 3-2 at the KC Stadium in November in the 11th minute with his third goal this term.

The Dutch forward took aim from 20 yards and thumped a low shot past Jody Craddock's desperate attempted block and Marcus Hahnemann's despairing dive after Jozy Altidore teed him up just outside the 'D' when he held off Christophe Berra's challenge.

Back came Wolves, Kevin Foley went close to equalising with free header following David Jones' corner and then Darren Ward sent a rising shot just wide of Boaz Myhill's right-hand post as Hull lived dangerously.

Mick McCarthy's side were unable to maintain any momentum, though, and that Michael Mancienne lost patience when it was badly needed by trying his luck from 40 yards with a shot that sailed over the target.

Such desperation just showed how difficult goals have been to come by for Wolves this season with the Premier League's lowest scorers hitting the target just 17 times since returning to the top flight last summer before their visit to East Yorkshire.

Wolves certainly looked like a team that could do with a helping and Hull skipper Gardner duly obliged when he sliced Ronald Zubar's cross over Myhill to restore equality in the 49th minute after Hunt had surrendered possession with a careless back-heel.

The lead lasted just three minutes thanks to Wolves' own defensive inadequacies as Zubar gave away a penalty when he climbed all over Altidore and Hunt slammed home the spot-kick past Hahnemann.

Trouble was, though, for Hull they defended just as badly if not worse than Wolves and Gardner's day went from bad to woeful as he squandered three opportunities to clear his lines before Jarvis struck the ball past Myhill in the 67th minute following Foley's cross.

Hull manager Phil Brown would have been forgiven for withdrawing Gardner or eright-back Paul McShane but instead sent on striker Amr Zaki for his debut seconds later but he could only watch as Vennegoor of Hesselink sent a free header wide and then Foley volleyed just wide.

It could have been worse for Hull, for whom Tom Cairney shone on his league debut, as Wolves almost sneaked a winner in stoppage time but Myhill beat away substitute Geoffrey Munjani's powerful shot.
