Triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt leapt to the top of the world rankings when he clocked 9.86 sec to win the 100 metres at the Jamaican Championships in Kingston, and still had time to point both index fingers at his chest before crossing the line.
His performance, which guaranteed his place at the World Championships in Berlin in August, was the fastest legal time of the year, despite being run into a slight headwind.
Asafa Powell, the former world record-holder who has been hampered by an early-season ankle injury, finished second in 9.97 sec, his quickest time of the year.
"It was good," said Bolt. "I'm just happy that I finished injury free. I'm now looking forward to getting into better shape."
Meanwhile, American Sanya Richards set up a showdown with Britain's Christine Ohuruogu in Berlin by winning the 400m in 50.05 sec at the United States trials in Eugene, Oregon.
Two years ago, Richards missed out on the World Championships in Osaka after illness caused her to finish fourth at the trials, but this time she made no mistake.
Her selection gives her the chance to avenge her defeat by Ohuruogu at last summer's Beijing Olympics, where she faded badly in the final straight and had to settle for the bronze medal.
The pair are due to race against each other for the first time this season when they compete in the 400m at the Bislett Games in Oslo on Friday.
LaShawn Merritt, the men's Olympic 400m champion, also came through the US trials without alarm, equalling his world-leading time with a victory in 44.50 sec.
