
Alona Bondarenko fought back from a set down to defeat Karolina Sprem 4-6 7-5 6-1 at the GDF Suez Grand Prix in Budapest.
Italy's world number 99 Maria Camerin also had to come from a set behind but ultimately made light work of Spanish opponent Lourdes Dominguez Lino, winning 4-6 6-0 6-1.
In the only other first-round match played on the tournament's opening day there was a win for Romania's Edina Gallovits, who defeated Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 7-5 6-2.
