Home win for Brianti in Palermo


Alberta Brianti thrilled her home fans at the Internazionali Femminili di Tennis di Palermo today by reaching the second round.

Brianti, the Italian number seven currently ranked just outside the world's top 100, stood two games from victory over her struggling opponent 6-3 4-0 when Pavlyuchenkova defaulted.

In the day's other first-round match, seventh seed Aravane Rezai of France had no such problems as she saw off another Russian, Galina Voskoboeva, in straight sets 6-2 6-4.

In today's remaining matches, Roberta Vinci came through an epic clash against Lourdes Dominguez Lino 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7/3), Olga Govortsova defeated Maria Elena Camerin 6-3 6-3 and Varvara Lepchenko saw off Corinna Dentoni 6-3 6-2.
