Pure gold for Kenyan Purity

Purity Rionoripo became the third successive Kenyan winner of the World Youth Championships 3,000 metres title.

Rionoripo fully deserved the victory in Bressanone after leading the other three main contenders - team-mate Jackline Chepngeno and the Ethiopian duo of Genet Yalew and Emebet Anteneh - through the first two kilometres.

At the bell, Anteneh decided to make a long run for the line but went too early and Rionoripo then made what proved to be a winning break to pull clear and win in nine minutes 03.79 seconds.

Chepngeno took silver ahead of Yalew in third.

Germany's Lena Urbaniak won the shot put title with a solid series of throws ahead of Margaret Satupai of Samoa and China's Yangzi Dong.

Syria's Hamid Manssour won the hammer after a huge throw of 64.20m in the final round.

Manssour, who took the lead in the fifth round, finished ahead of American Ryan Crouser with Jamaica's Travis Smikle claiming bronze after a personal best of 61.22m.
