Rain ruins WI-Bangla Test's Day 1

Only 18.5 overs of play were bowled as rain disrupted the first day of the first Test between Bangladesh and West Indies.

The visitors were 42 without loss at the end of a stop-start day with Imrul Kayes and Tamim Iqbal at the crease.

The start of the game at Kingstown was delayed due to rain but eventually Bangladesh won the toss and put themselves in to bat.

Openers Kayes and Iqbal made a cautious start as they reached tea on 36 without loss.

The teams resumed but just six more runs were added before rain forced them off again and play was later abandoned for the day.

Rain stopped the play

Kayes was unbeaten on 26 off 52 deliveries with Iqbal 14 not out off 18.5 overs.

The game had been overshadowed by a second string being selected for West Indies after more established names pulled out because of a contract dispute.

The likes of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan sat out the clash due to the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) recommending they boycott the game because of a long-standing row over retainer contracts for players.

Their absence has led to the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) having to cobble together a squad made up of veterans and up-and-coming youngsters.

The team is being captained by Floyd Reifer, who last played a Test in 1999, while 16-year-old Kraigg Brathwaite has also been included in a 15-man party.

Darren Sammy is the most recognised name with Tino Best also involved.

Teams:

West Indies: DM Richards, O Phillips, TM Dowlin, FL Reifer, DE Bernard, C Walton, DJG Sammy, TL Best, NO Miller, RA Austin, KAJ Roach.

Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal, Junaid Siddique, Imrul Kayes, Mohammad Ashraful, Raqibul Hasan, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah, Mashrafe Mortaza, Shahadat Hossain, Rubel Hossain.
