
A female spectator was killed on Saturday after being struck by a motorcycle as she watched the 14th stage of the Tour de France.
The woman was hit by a Republican Guard vehicle in Wittelsheim, a village 40 kilometres from the start of today's stage from Colmar to Besancon.
Two other spectators were injured in the incident. They are being treated in hospital.
The Republican Guard are the ceremonial unit of the French police force.
The website of French daily L'Equipe, www.lequipe.fr, added that the female who died was aged 61.
The same source said she was struck by the motorcycle as she crossed the road following the passing of an escape group at the front of the Tour's field, but before the chasing peloton has passed.
