Adelaide open with a victory

Travis Dodd's first-half penalty secured a 1-0 win for Adelaide United in their game against Perth Glory.

Travis Dodd's first-half penalty secured a 1-0 win for Adelaide United in their opening game of the A-League season against Perth Glory at Hindmarsh Stadium today.

Referee Craig Zetter adjudged Chris Coyne - making his debut following his summer signing from Colchester - to have fouled defender Robert Cornthwaite inside the area in the 29th minute.

Dodd then stepped up to fire home from the penalty spot and ensure a winning start to the season for Adelaide.

"It was a really courageous effort from our team after losing Lucas (Pantelis) early and then Paul Reid early in the second half," said Adelaide coach Aurelio Vidmar on the A-League's official website.

"Competitive pressure from both sides tonight was tremendous, especially in the first half. But I think we deserved to win the game."
