Elena Dementieva stunned red-hot favourite Serena Williams to set up a Rogers Cup final with fellow underdog Maria Sharapova.
Russian Dementieva, seeded fourth for the event, was pitted against Williams who has been on fine form this week and was expected to lift the trophy following the early departures of top seed Dinara Safina and sister Venus.
Sharapova, meanwhile, continued to show glimpses of her best tennis as she despatched Alisa Kleybanova 6-2 4-6 6-4.
Dementieva edged a tight opening set against Williams in their last-four meeting before racing through the second to book her spot in the showpiece.
The game finished 7-6(2) 6-1 with Dementieva carving open 10 chances for service breaks and converting half of them.
Sharapova, who is unseeded for the cup but who has been a danger to higher-ranked players all week, had to battle for two hours, 37 minutes for her victory.
She could have wrapped things up earlier were it not for an inability to close out break points, having taken only five from 22.
