England qualified for the 2010 World Cup in Delhi in the grand manner, outclassing a useful Belgian outfit to the tune of 8-2 in their third match at the European Cup.
An dominant performance confirmed what England had suggested in the 4-4 draw with Germany two days earlier: they are now good enough to challenge any team in the world.
Belgium, needing to win, started well, took the lead, and but for a great James Fair save, could have been all square at 2-2 before England raced into a 4-1 lead.
The initial difference between the teams was the individual brilliance of Ashley Jackson. The Belgians could not "put a stick" on him. The 21 year-old also scored two of England's first three goals and the crucial first goal of the second half which meant a 5-2 lead.
When Jackson, an injury doubt before the game, was not on the field, the Richard's, Mantell and Alexander, scored corner goals while Jonty Clarke twice and James Tindall finished off other slick England moves.
England will now play Holland, the hosts and defending champions, or France in Friday's semi-finals.
Meanwhile England women are back in action later on Wednesday against Germany, also holders, for a place in Saturday's final. They go into the game having lost five of their last six matches against the Olympic semi-finalists.
