Quarterback Eli Manning has become the highest-paid player in the NFL after signing a bumper new deal with the New York Giants.
The contract is worth a reported US dollars 97million over the next six years, an average of USD15.3 million.
Pro-Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha of the Oakland Raiders previously had the highest annual salary in the league at USD15.1 million after signing a three-year deal.
Manning has also surpassed his brother Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts. Peyton is paid around USD14.7 million annually.
The new contract caps a remarkable turnaround for Manning, who only a couple of years ago was facing questions over his long-term future in New York after some frustrating inconsistency.
But he put everything together to lead the Giants to an unexpected Super Bowl in 2008, and has now established himself as one of the league's premier players.
Manning completed 289 of 479 passes for 3,238 yards and 21 touchdowns last season, earning his first Pro Bowl nomination.
