Rafael Nadal to make Montreal comeback

Rafael Nadal will make his comeback on the men’s tennis tour next week in Montreal after a 10-week absence because of a knee injury.

“Rafa will play in Montreal,” Toni Nadal, who has coached the former top-ranked player since he was four years old, said. “It’s good news for us.”

Nadal played his last competitive match on May 31, when the six-time Grand Slam champion was upset by Robin Soderling of Sweden in the fourth round at Roland Garros.

Tendinitis in both knees forced him to withdraw from Wimbledon, where he was defending champion. He’s been recovering at home in Majorca in Spain.

The 23-year-old is the defending champion at the Rogers Cup, which starts on Aug 8 in Montreal. It is a warmup event for the US Open, the only major that Nadal hasn’t won, which begins on Aug 31 in New York.

“The level he’ll be at is another matter,” Toni Nadal said.

“I don’t think he’ll be in very good form. He’s been training well but without forcing things. The goal is to gradually pick up form for the U.S. Open.”

During Nadal’s absence, Roger Federer won his first French Open title and beat Andy Roddick in the Wimbledon final for a record-breaking 15th Grand Slam title.

Nadal has beaten the Swiss, who also regained his No. 1 ranking from the Spaniard after Wimbledon, 13 times in 20 meetings.

“My main objective isn’t to regain the No. 1 ranking,” Nadal said in an interview on Spanish television last week. “My main goal is to be well and happy to be playing tennis.”
