Sheffield United 2 West Brom 2

The Championship game between Sheffield United and West Brom at Bramall Lane on Saturday Aug 29, 2009.

Two of the Championship's heavyweights provided a compelling second half at Bramall Lane where a flurry of goals - the first three in a six-minute spell - enabled both to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Roman Bednar scored his first goal of the season when delivering an opportunist double that put West Brom in the driving seat, but Sheffield responded through Ched Evans and a penalty from David Cotterill secured deserved parity.

Sheffield failed to win because of their inability to convert first-half superiority into goals, although they were hampered by Albion's aggressive approach.

Keith Treacy and Darius Henderson forced two early saves from Scott Carson, before a cut-back from the right wing by Evans saw a useful Matt Kilgallon attempt blocked.

Carson collected again from Treacy but for all their territorial advantage, Sheffield never seriously threatened to break the deadlock.

When Albion finally threatened themselves, shortly before the break, a crisply-taken shot from Jerome Thomas struck home captain Chris Morgan and the deflection left Sheffield United goalkeeper Mark Bunn untroubled.

The hosts continued with equal authority after half-time, Stephen Quinn seeing his shot turned behind by Carson. However, it was the visitors who drew first blood, Bednar heading in the right-wing cross from Thomas for the 53rd-minute opening goal.

Sheffield levelled within two minutes, Evans forcing the ball in from close range from Jamie Ward's cross.

Bednar then struck again in the 59th minute, holding off Morgan before driving beyond Bunn. But a rash Shaun Cummings challenge on Henderson provided the penalty that Cotterill despatched with ease.
