Melbourne Victory suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Central Coast Mariners in the A-League opener at Etihad Stadium.
After proving so dominant last season, Victory looked sluggish throughout this encounter and found themselves 2-0 down within the opening 15 minutes.
Matt Simon opened the scoring in the 10th minute after defenders failed to pick him up following John Hutchinson's free-kick.
The game was over as a contest five minutes later when Michael McGlinchley's effort from distance deflected off defender Rody Vargas and into the back of the net with goalkeeper Glen Moss stranded.
The result was all the more impressive for the Mariners considering the torrid form they have endured this year. It was their first victory in either the A-League or the Asian Champions League since New Year's Eve last year.
