Stuttgart 0-0 Timisoara

Stuttgart joined fellow Bundesliga sides Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich in the Champions League draw for the group stages.

This was after completing a 2-0 aggregate victory over Timisoara with a goalless draw at the Mercedes-Benz Arena tonight

Markus Babbel's side had effectively done all of the hard work in Romania a week ago and spent 90 minutes controlling their advantage against a timid Timisoara side.

The visitors rarely threatened to find a route back into the game and it was their hosts who came the closest to scoring when Sebastian Rudy hit the post in the 58th minute.

Babbel made numerous changes to his regular starting XI with 19-year-old midfielder Rudy given a rare start alongside Timo Gebhardt in midfield while Romanian striker Ciprian Marica took the place of Cacau in attack.

It was clear that Babbel was not too worried about losing his side's two-goal advantage from the first leg, and he was justified.

It was Stuttgart who came closest to breaking the deadlock with Sami Khedira shooting powerfully wide in the 12th minute.

In the 19th minute, Thomas Hitzlsperger's shot was deflected wide of goal after neither Marica nor Pavel Pogrebnyak had been able to convert chances in a goalmouth scramble.

Rudy's shot against the post in the 58th minute was the closest either side came to scoring and Mathieu Delpierre almost despatched the rebound, but his shot was blocked.

The Romanians' best chance of the game arrived 10 minutes later when Gheorghe Bucur almost punished Stuttgart goalkeeper Jens Lehmann for reacting late to a cross from the left wing as he beat him to the ball, but headed just wide of goal.

Timisoara started to raise their tempo, but it was too little, too late as they failed to break down a comfortable Stuttgart defence.

Babbel's side held on without breaking a sweat to qualify for the group stage.
