Yankees stretch lead in East

Melky Cabrera and Jorge Posada hit three-run homers as the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 13-6.

The pair went deep in an eight-run fourth, adding to Johnny Damon's homer in the third, before Mark Teixeira sealed matters for the American League East leaders in the seventh.

The Yankees' fourth consecutive victory increased their lead over the Red Sox to three games.

Brandon Inge's two-run homer in a four-run second inning lifted the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers to a 7-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

Rick Porcello allowed four hits in 5 2/3 innings for the Tigers while Alex Avila, son of Detroit assistant general manager Al Avila, had two hits on debut.

Jeff Mathis, Vladimir Guerrero, Bobby Abreu and all homered as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Chicago White Sox 9-5.

Six runs in the first three innings did the damage for the Angels as the White Sox fell two games behind Detroit.

Hunter gave up three runs in seven innings while Hank Blalock and Michael Young went deep as the Texas Rangers overcame the Oakland Athletics 6-4.

The Rangers remain four games adrift of the Angels in the AL West.

Trevor Crowe and Jhonny Peralta drove in one RBI apiece to guide the Cleveland Indians to a narrow 2-1 triumph over the Minnesota Twins.

Minnesota have now lost five of six on the back of a four-game winning streak.

The Kansas City Royals' Billy Butler capped a five-run first inning with a homer en route an 8-2 thrashing of the Seattle Mariners.
