Seve Ballesteros is to send a video message when Jose Maria Olazabal is inducted into golf's Hall of Fame in Florida on November 2.
Olazabal had hoped his fellow Spaniard and former Ryder Cup partner, who underwent four life-saving operations after the discovery of a brain tumour last October, would be well enough to attend the ceremony.
Ballesteros said: "Provided I am unable to be physically there, believe me that my heart and thoughts will be with you all.
"It is fantastic knowing that Jose Maria will become a member of the Hall of Fame. He deserves it for all he has done and is still doing for golf.
"He means a lot to me. He is one of my best friends and I have had the honour of sharing with him many different moments in our lives.
"He has been by my side in the good times and in the not so very good times and I will always be there for him."
Ireland's Christy O'Connor is also being inducted and will be presented by his nephew Christy Jnr.
