The quality of Melanie Oudin's tennis at the US Open, with the 17 year-old the youngest American to feature in the quarter-finals for a decade, was made to look all the more remarkable when it emerged that her parents are getting divorced after allegations that her mother has been having an affair with the teenager's coach.
In the quarter-finals, the world No 70 lost in straight sets to Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki.
Sports Illustrated has quoted from documents in a county court in Georgia, in which John Oudin has alleged that his wife, Leslie, was "unfaithful in marriage".
According to the magazine, John Oudin made a sworn statement to the court, in which he alleged that his wife had been having an affair with Brian de Villiers, who has coached Melanie since she was nine.
"On Dec 29, 2007, I confronted my wife about whether she was having an affair with Brian de Villiers.
"I confronted Brian de Villiers separately. My wife and Brian de Villiers both admitted to me that they were having an affair," John Oudin has been quoted as saying in the sworn statement, in which he also implied that Melanie knew that her mother was having an affair with her coach.
