
Claudio Pizarro scored twice as Werder Bremen continued their march up the table by easing past Mainz.
Aaron Hunt opened the scoring for Bremen in the 38th minute and Pizarro doubled the advantage in the 71st minute and made it 3-0 in the 82nd.
Thomas Schaaf's Werder side is undefeated in their last six contests since starting the season with a defeat and are now fourth in the league with 12 points.
Elkin Soto nearly gave the visitors the lead after just two minutes, sending his left-foot shot just inches wide of the far right post.
The promoted side lost their captain Tim Hoogland just three minutes later due to injury
Mainz goalkeeper Heinz Müller made a fine stop from Pizarro in the 24th minute and Soto was again just off-target, firing his shot just over eight minutes later after a counter-attack from Mainz.
The hosts increased their pressure and grabbed the lead seven minutes before the break. Marko Marin's through-ball was collected by Philipp Bargfrede, who crossed back to a charging Hunt for a blast home from four yards.
Bremen remained on the hunt for the 2-0 lead in the second half though Naldo's free kick blast was deflected over the crossbar in the 58th minute and Pizarro's shot from the left side went over 10 minutes later.
Pizarro finally broke through the Mainz defence with 19 minutes to play, rising high to head a high cross past Müller from the right side by Petri Pasanen.
Pizarro doubled his goal total for the day with eight minutes left with another header.
