Xerez 0-3 Deportivo La Coruna

Xerez remain rooted to the foot of the Primera Division following a painful home defeat to Deportivo La Coruna.

The Andalusians are in the top flight for the first time ever but have had to endure an unhappy start to life in La Liga.

The promoted outfit fought bravely at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday night but eventually went down 5-0 as Real Madrid struck four late goals.

And Jose Angel Ziganda's men were on the receiving end of three more tonight as they slid to a fourth straight defeat in the top division.

Xerez went behind after 26 minutes when Juca scored a cracking free-kick for Depor.

The home side had much of the game after that and even hit the woodwork, but once again failed to score and the game was effectively over when Leandro Gioda headed into his own net after 68 minutes.

Substitute Riki added a third to give Deportivo a comfortable win and compound the misery for a Xerez side that remain both goalless and point-less.

Xerez began with a defensive-minded 4-1-4-1 formation against a Deportivo side renowned for their quality on the counter-attack.

And the Galicians struggled to break down the home side as the match was evenly-disputed in the early stages.

Most of the play was breaking down in midfield and neither side looked likely to score until Juca's free-kick stunned Xerez after 26 minutes.

The Brazilian stepped up and crashed a thunderous effort past Xerez keeper Renan Brito from the edge of the area to give the visitors the upper hand.

The locals took a while to recover but came out firing on all cylinders in the second half.

Emiliano Armenteros and Carlos Calvo both came close to an equaliser for the Andalusians, and after Adrian Lopez had missed a decent chance for Deportivo at the other end, Mario Barmejo crashed a volley against the crossbar as Xerez dominated.

Xerez could not convert possession into the lead, however, and were soon further behind when Gioda put through his own net midway through the half.

The defender was looking to clear a corner but could only head into this own net and Xerez would never recover.

From another corner, Riki headed a third for Deportivo with 11 minutes left to complete a happy evening for the Galicians and another miserable night for the home side.

After four rounds of matches, Xerez remain bottom of the table, having let in 11 goals. Deportivo, meanwhile, climb to seventh place, having won two and lost two of their four games.
