Defending champions Melbourne Victory moved back to the top of the A-League with a 1-0 win over Brisbane Roar.
Thompson headed home an inviting cross from captain Kevin Muscat after just eight minutes.
His sixth goal of the season helped Melbourne bounce back from last Saturday's 4-0 home defeat by Central Coast Mariners to move two points clear of Sydney, who travel to Perth Glory tomorrow.
The fourth-placed Mariners remain just four points adrift of the leaders after recording an emphatic 5-1 win at basement side North Queensland Fury.
Pedj Bojic and Nik Mrdja set the Mariners on their way inside the opening 35 minutes at Dairy Farmers Stadium.
Mrdja added a second just before the hour mark before Ahmad Elrich added a fourth after 62 minutes.
Rostyn Griffiths grabbed a consolation for North Queensland six minutes later before John Hutchinson sealed Central Coast's sixth win of the season with eight minutes remaining.
