New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur set a new NHL record with a 104th career shut-out in a 4-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The 37-year-old Canadian was making his 1,032nd appearance for the Devils, and they went top of the Atlantic Division - above Pittsburgh - thanks to his efforts and goals from Bryce Salvador, Niclas Bergfors, in-form Patrik Elias and Mark Fraser.
The New York Rangers were too good for the Carolina Hurricanes, winning 3-1 in a match which saw Marian Gaborik grab his 25th goal of the campaign.
Brandon Dubinsky and Marc Staal were also on the scoresheet for the Rangers, who have now won three matches in a row, while Carolina scored first through Sergei Samsonov but unsurprisingly fell away.
The Boston Bruins shut out the Ottawa Senators, winning 2-0 with goals from Patrice Bergeron and Marco Sturm in the third period.
The Tampa Bay Lightning came from behind to sink the New York Islanders 4-2, with Steven Stamkos, Vincent Lecavalier and Ryan Malone (2) on target.
Derek Roy hit an overtime winner as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2, after earlier goals from Nathan Paetsch and Jochen Hecht.
Overtime was also required in the clash between the Montreal Canadiens and the Atlanta Thrashers, with Marc-Andre Bergeron proving to be the match-winner.
Bergeron grabbed a late equaliser for Montreal before then notching in overtime to secure a 4-3 victory.
The Philadelphia Flyers slumped to another defeat, their 14th in 17 matches, as they crashed 4-1 to the Florida Panthers whose strikes came from Nathan Horton (2), Stephen Weiss and Michael Frolik.
The Colorado Avalanche beat the Minnesota Wild 4-3, scoring three times in the second period before hanging on after their opponents staged a fightback.
Matt Duchene, Chris Stewart, Milan Hejduk and Matt Hendricks netted for Colorado, however Cal Clutterbuck replied and third-period goals from Owen Nolan and Martin Havlat made for a thrilling finish.
The Phoenix Coyotes stretched their winning record on home ice to seven matches, beating the off-form Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 with two goals from Scottie Upshall plus further strikes from Shane Doan, Radim Vrbata and Matthew Lombardi.
The St Louis Blues enjoyed a good night, posting a crushing 7-2 win away to the struggling Edmonton Oilers. Andy McDonald scored twice and further goals came from David Perron, Brad Boyes, Patrik Berglund, Alexander Steen and Jay McClement.
Patrick Marleau grabbed a double in the San Jose Sharks' 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars.
