Heracles Almelo's impressive campaign continued apace tonight as they posted a narrow win over VVV Venlo to move up to fifth place in the Eredivisie.
Brazilian forward Everton scored the only goal of the night after 55 minutes as Heracles posted their 10th victory in 18 outings this season.
Defeat for ninth-placed VVV was their sixth of the campaign and could leave them just three points clear of the relegation places if results elsewhere go against them this weekend.
A dismal first half was enlivened by just two goalscoring chances, both of which went the way of the hosts.
First Kwame Quansah's seventh-minute effort after a neat one-two with Darl Douglas was blocked by Patrick Paauwe, while Antoine Van der Linden fired straight at VVV goalkeeper Kevin Begois minutes later when he might have done better.
The hosts wasted little time moving ahead in the second half, however, just 10 minutes gone when Everton broke the deadlock with a fine free-kick into the top-left corner which had Begois well beaten.
Douglas might have made it two after 73 minutes but his solo run ended with a disappointing shot over the bar.
VVV's first chance of note arrived 12 minutes from time as Paauwe delivered a dangerous low ball into the six-yard area but the home defence cleared.
The hosts ended with a flourish and might have made the win more comfortable if not for a superb save and a slice of misfortune.
Quansah was the first to go close on 81 minutes but saw his drilled effort met by a brilliant diving save by Begois, the keeper doing well to hold onto the ball.
Everton had the final chance of the night, unleashing an effort from just inside the area in added-on time but he was unfortunate to see the ball strike the post.
