Kirk Shepherd gains revenge at World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace

Kirk Shepherd gained an element of revenge for his defeat by the Canadian John Part in the 2008 final with a 4-1 victory to put the No 4 seed out of the PDC World Championship at Alexandra Palace in London on Monday.

Both players produced below-par performances but it was Shepherd, ranked 29th, who prevailed to reach the third round. "I'm happy to get through but it wasn't tidy," admitted Shepherd, from Birmingham. "In the World Championship you have to play well to go far and I didn't play well at all. I can't just click my fingers and play well, it doesn't work like that. I need to go away and practise."

Kevin Painter, runner-up to Phil Taylor in 2004, hit 11 180 maximums as he came through a dramatic seven-set encounter against Dutchman Vincent van der Voort. Painter, from Daventry, led 2-0 and 3-2 but was pegged back on both occasions before eventually clinching his place in the third round.

He was joined by Chelmsford's Colin Lloyd, 52, who had to come from behind on three occasions to beat Denis Ovens 4-3. Lloyd said: "I definitely feel like I got out of jail. Denis missed a lot of doubles and that allowed me to win. I've had a rotten time at the World Championships over the last few years so I feel I am due a bit of luck."

Ovens missed chances for a 3-1 lead in fourth set and the Hertfordshire player was made to regret them as Lloyd came through to take the match.
