Real Valladolid 2-1 Sporting Gijon

Real Valladolid picked up only their third of the season - as Haris Medunjanin's winner earned a victory over Sporting Gijon.

The Bosnian fired in from Alberto Bueno's pass 12 minutes after coming on to complete Valladolid's comeback after they had trailed to Luis Moran's opener in the 13th minute.

Nivaldo converted a close-range header to level just before the half-hour mark and both sides had chances to win it before Medunjanin settled the contest.

The win moved Valladolid four points clear of the bottom three.

Diego da Silva Costa twice fired off target for Valladolid early on before the visitors went in front with their first opportunity.

Moran picked out the bottom left corner of the net with a right-foot shot from inside the area to put the visitors on course for their first points in December.

Fabian Canobbio curled a free-kick wide before delivering another from the right wing in the 22nd minute which was met by Manucho, but the Angola striker's header was weak as Valladolid continued to look dangerous.

Both sides were creating chances with David Barral heading wide for Sporting and Costa sending an overhead kick from Borja's cross past the post for the hosts.

Valladolid levelled in the 29th minute when Alberto Marcos won a free-kick in the left channel.

Canobbio played the ball in and, after Cesar Arzo had won a header in the centre of the area, Nivaldo was on hand to nod home.

The equaliser seemed to spur the home side on and they created three more openings before the break.

Costa was twice picked out in the area, but his first header was saved by Sporting goalkeeper Juan Pablo and the second he sent weakly over the top.

The influential Canobbio then saw his drilled left-footed effort parried by Pablo.

Canobbio created another chance for Manucho three minutes after the break when his free-kick picked out the former Manchester United man, whose header was off target.

But Valladolid then had goalkeeper Justo Villar to thank for keeping them on level terms.

He first punched away a drilled shot by Miguel de las Cuevas and, seconds later, a fine effort from Michel.

Michel sent a header from Moran's outswinging corner from the right over the top with 18 minutes to go as Sporting looked to regain the lead.

It was Valladolid who finished the stronger, though, as Canobbio and Alvaro Rubio both failed to find the target from crosses from Costa.

But Medunjanin, having been introduced for Canobbio in the 78th minute, made no such mistake in stoppage time to earn the home side a much-needed victory.
