The Premier League game between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley from Molineux on Sunday Dec 20th, 2009.
A chastening week for Mick McCarthy ended on a satisfying note as Wolves' convincing win over Burnley reaffirmed his right to choose whatever team he pleased.
The brick bats McCarthy has endured since sending a team of reserves to Old Trafford were forgotten at Molineux as Nenad Milijas and Kevin Doyle produced the strikes that made him appear a wise owl rather than a reckless gambler.
Wolves were rewarded for the perseverance of their play when the dynamic Doyle dispossessed Clarke Carlisle, sliding a pass into the path of Matt Jarvis, whose shot was well parried by Brian Jensen.
But Burnley's goalkeeper their affectionately nicknamed 'Beast' was powerless to defend the follow-up as Milijas lashed in the rebound amid woeful marking by Owen Coyle's side. The goal marked a promising upturn in form for the Serbia international, who has scored in Wolves' last two home games.
The Burnley retaliation was immediate. Chris Eagles, as determined as ever on the left, set up an enticing chance for Kevin MacDonald, who sent a shot fractionally wide of the far post. Doyle, though, remained the most luminous talent on display and he cleverly beat the offside trap in rushing on to a chip by Milijas.
Just as Burnley were trying to mount a fight back, Doyle pounced again, rounding Michael Duff all too easily, finding the angle to dispatch his drive beyond Jensen. The Irishman's only mistake was in ripping his shirt off to receive a booking.
Burnley's desperate search for an equaliser was thwarted when Steven Caldwell's header was cleared off the line. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake was in a position to put Wolves further out of sight before Jensen beat away his point-blank header.
