A last-gasp strike by substitute Piotr Trochowski earned Hamburg a share of the spoils with Wolfsburg to keep them close to the top four in the Bundesliga.
The hosts looked to be heading for only their third defeat of the season at their AOL Arena as they trailed to a first-half goal from Edin Dzeko.
But Trochowski struck in the second minute of stoppage time to snatch a draw for Hamburg and move them a point behind fourth-placed Borussia Dortmund.
Wolfsburg came into the match looking for their first win of 2010, and gave their opponents a scare after 12 minutes with a left-footed strike from Grafite which was directed inches past the left post.
Mladen Petric produced Hamburg's first chance from a free-kick which he curled narrowly wide from 25 yards, while a close-range header from Marcus Berg soon after had to be parried clear by goalkeeper Andre Lenz.
But the home side found themselves playing catch-up after 34 minutes when Dzeko collected the ball on the edge of the area before curling a shot into the bottom left corner.
Hamburg began the search for an equaliser in earnest after the interval, with Tomas Rincon firing a powerful drive past the left post early in the second half.
Elijero Elia then struck the crossbar with his 53rd-minute header from a Dennis Agog cross, while Lenz had to make a diving save to keep out a drilled effort from David Jarolim three minutes later.
Berg was the next to try his luck with a strike from 15 yards which flew over the crossbar, and Marcell Jansen saw his header cleared off the line by Sascha Riether with time running out for the home side to get on the scoresheet.
But when it seemed Wolfsburg would be walking away with the points, Trochowski curled a free-kick into the top right corner to rescue a deserved point for Hamburg.
