Sampdoria 1-1 Catania

Sampdoria's winless run was extended to seven games in all competitions after they were held to a draw by Catania.

The home side, whose last Serie A victory was back in November, fell behind to a superb Cristian Llama free-kick but star striker Giampaolo Pazzini won and then converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time to give the hosts a share of the spoils.

It was a well-earned point for Catania but not enough to take them out of the relegation zone. Indeed, the result sees them slip a place to 19th while fourth-bottom Bologna's shock win at Fiorentina means the gap to safety now stands at three points.

Catania looked every inch a team looking nervously over their shoulders in the early stages as Samp started in determined fashion.

Luigi Del Neri's men could have gone ahead in the opening minute after Antonio Cassano played Andrea Poli into space inside the area, with only some last-ditch defending preventing Poli from scoring.

A minute later and Catania were on the back foot once more. Pazzini went down in the box but referee Emidio Morganti waved away the protests.

Cassano was causing the Catania defence all sorts of problems with his clever movement and the former Real Madrid playmaker almost conjured up a fortuitous opener after 10 minutes.

He held the ball up nicely before turning his marker and chipping in a deflected cross which almost caught out keeper Mariano Andujar.

After soaking up all that pressure, Catania promptly went up the other end and took the lead. Giuseppe Mascara was felled on the edge of the area and the ensuing free-kick from Llama was placed expertly past former Catania keeper Marco Storari.

It looked as though Catania would hold an interval lead, but just before the whistle Matias Silvestre brought down Pazzini in the area and the much-coveted frontman made no mistake from the spot.

The second half was poor in comparison to the first although Catania did offer more going forward.

And it was the Sicilian side who created the first opportunity with a Mascara free-kick hitting the wall and deflecting away for a corner.

Samp quickly regained the initiative, however, and wasted a presentable chance to go back in front with 19 minutes to go.

Ciro Capuano brought down Marco Padalino just outside the area, but Reto Ziegler went for power rather than placement and the effort was cleared after a penalty area scramble.

After Jorge Martinez had threatened at the other end, Samp came again and after another almighty scramble in the Catania area, Daniele Gastaldello just failed to convert.

The final chance also fell the way of the home side with Cassano crossing for Marco Rossi but the defender headed wide.
