Schalke 1-0 Nurnberg

Kevin Kuranyi's goal early in the second half was enough for Schalke to beat Nurnberg at home and continued their strong run.

Kuranyi scored the only goal of the game in the 48th minute and the Schalke defence made it hold up.

Felix Magath's team clinched their fourth straight victory and fifth in the last six games to return to second place in the Bundesliga with 37 points, one behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

Nurnberg, meanwhile, are in the midst of a miserable run and lost their sixth straight game, failing to score in the last five while conceding 13 times.

Schalke had the first chance of the game after nine minutes as Edu chested a cross down for Ivan Rakitic, who shot narrowly wide from 20 yards.

The visitors had a golden opportunity to take the lead after 26 minutes. Marcelo Bordon lost a ball to Angelos Charisteas and the Greek striker raced down the left wing and beat Schalke keeper Manuel Neuer to the far right post from 16 yards but the ball hit the upright and bounced away.

Schalke grabbed the lead three minutes after the re-start.

Jefferson Farfan fended off Horacio Pinola on the right side and crossed into the box where Kuranyi was quicker to the ball than Dennis Diekmeier to hit home from three yards.

Nurnberg again hit the framework with 22 minutes left as Christian Eigler raced past and through five Schalke defenders and unleashed a strong blast from 14 yards which Neuer barely deflected with his right leg off the left post.
