Windies beat Lanka to finish third


The West Indies beat Sri Lanka by four wickets at QEII Park in Christchurch on Friday to finish third in the ICC U19 WC.

The West Indies had won the toss and put Sri Lanka in to bat. The Lankans put 291/6 on board and the Windies chased down the target in 48.3 overs.

Sri Lanka started well, with the opening pair of Udara Jayasundera and Denuwan Rajakaruna putting up 173 runs for first wicket.

However, 19-year old Rajakaruna’s fell just six runs short of his century. He made an impressive 94 off 118 balls with a strike rate of 79. Banuka Rajapaksa also made an important contribution and finished unbeaten on 43 as Sri Lanka amassed 291 for six.

Man of the Match, Yannic Cariah, scored an unbeaten century to lead the Windies to victory. Coming in when the Windies were struggling at six for two, Cariah scored a quick-fire 110 from 127 balls.

John Campbell and Jermaine Blackwood aided Cariah well, scoring 77 and 41 runs respectively.

Sri Lanka captain Chathura Peiris dealt the Windies early blows by getting rid of big-hitting opener Kraigg Brathwaite and then accounting for Trevon Griffith.
