Bayer Leverkusen moved three points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, but were made to sweat against Wolfsburg.
Stefan Reinartz put the home team ahead in the 48th minute before an own goal from the luckless Andre Lenz doubled their advantage in the 68th minute.
A goal from Edin Dzeko 10 minutes from time had Leverkusen panicking, but they managed to hold on to the three points which take them clear at the top of the Bundesliga ahead of Bayern Munich's clash with Borussia Dortmund later this evening.
Wolfsburg coach Lorenz-Gunther Kostner insisted Lenz would be able to grit his teeth and cope with the pain that had prevented him from training all week, but the veteran goalkeeper will probably wish he had not bothered.
He was at fault for Leverkusen's first goal while he scored their second, albeit unwittingly.
The home side had to wait until the third minute of the second half before going ahead, thanks to Lenz.
The Wolfsburg custodian fumbled Toni Kroos' free-kick and Reinartz accepted the gift to tuck the ball into the empty net.
Leverkusen were relying on the acrobatics to add a second with Derdiyok and Stefan Kiessling both trying their luck with diverse overhead kicks.
A further scissor-kick attempt had the home fans calling Derdiyok's name, but for all his initiative, a second goal to ease the home side's worries remained elusive until the 68th minute when Lenz obliged once again.
Derdiyok's powerful header from another Kroos free-kick struck the crossbar and bounced back onto Lenz's leg, rebounding back into the net.
Dzeko reduced the arrears by beating Adler at the second attempt in the 79th minute, setting the stage for a grandstand finish in which Josue and Zvjezdan Misimovic both went close to scoring before Stefan Kiessling placed his shot wide of an open goal with the final kick of the game.
