Mainz 0-0 Bochum

Bochum inched further away from the danger zone with a credible point at Mainz.

The sides cancelled each other out in a drab affair at the Stadion am Bruchweg but the visitors will be the happier after the point carried them up to 12th, nine points off the drop. Mainz remain in eighth.

It was always going to be a tight match with Mainz eager to preserve their unbeaten home record against a Bochum side who were unbeaten in their previous 10 matches.

The hosts should have taken the lead in the 12th minute with arguably the best chance of the match when Florian Heller picked out Filip Trojan in the centre of the area but the former Bochum midfielder blazed over.

Trojan was again almost the instigator of his former team's downfall minutes later when he played Aristide Bance through on goal, but Bochum goalkeeper Philipp Heerwagen was able to save easily.

His Mainz counterpart had a more difficult stop seconds later and Heinz Muller got down well to deny Joel Epalle.

Bochum should have taken the lead in the 25th minute but Zletko Dedic sliced his shot wide of the right upright after he had been sent clear by Lewis Holtby.

The sides came out even more cautiously after the break and neither really had a sight of goal in a poor second half.

Bochum came close to breaking the deadlock in the 77th minute but Andreas Johansson fired Paul Frier's cross wide of the left hand post from a good position in the middle of the box.
