
Number one seed Juan Carlos Ferrero won his Brasil Open first-round clash in Costa do Sauipe.
The former world number one defeated Eduardo Schwank of Argentina 7-6 (7/4) 6-3 to progress to a second round clash with Nicolas Massu.
Massu, from Chile, defeated qualifier Rogerio Dutra Da Silva of Brazil 6-4 3-6 6-4.
Third seed Thomaz Bellucci was a straight sets 6-2 7-5 winner over fellow Brazilian Thiago Alves, a wildcard, and will meet Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the next round.
Russia's Igor Andreev, the fourth seed, was a 6-2 6-2 victor over Potito Starace of Italy and sixth seed Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay defeated Filippo Volandri 6-4 6-3.
Fifth seed Victor Hanescu claimed a 7-6 (7/5) 6-4 win over Joao Souza, but seventh seed Horacio Zeballos will take no further part in the tournament after retiring with a hip problem while trailing Marcel Granollers of Spain 7-5 3-0.
Other first-round winners today were Lukasz Kubot of Poland, Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela, Fabio Fognini of Italy, Portugal's Frederico Gil, qualifier Rui Machado and wildcard Ricardo Hocevar.
