Zvonareva into last eight in Pattaya

Vera Zvonareva continued her progress at the Pattaya Open by advancing to the quarter-finals with a defeat of Alberta Brianti.

The Russian won 6-3 6-2 although it was not as straightforward as the scoreline would suggest, the match taking an hour and 28 minutes to complete.

Zvonareva's compatriot and third seed Vera Dushevina is out, though, after going down 6-4 6-1 to Ekaterina Bychkova.

Anna Chakvetadze and Tatjana Malek progressed, albeit in different circumstances.

Chakvetadze thrashed Anastasia Rodionova 6-4 6-1 while Malek was made to struggle before edging out Yung-Jan Chan 6-2 0-6 7-5 in over two hours.

Fifth seed Sybille Bammer was also pushed but advanced to the last eight thanks to a 5-7 6-4 6-2 defeat of Kai-Chen Chang.
