Cagliari 1-3 Siena

Siena got their Serie A campaign up and running at the second attempt with a win at Cagliari.

Having opened their season with defeat to AC Milan, the Robur responded in style with two goals from Emanuele Calaio and another from Reginaldo earning them three points at the Sant' Elia.

Cagliari's only reply came from a Jeda penalty as they continue to search for their first victory.

The fixture saw Siena coach Marco Giampaolo return to the club he managed twice in 2006 and 2007.

And he would have been encouraged by the early signs from his players with Calaio coming close to the target with a fifth-minute header.

Joaquin Larrivey wasted Cagliari's first chance when it fell his way, mishitting Jeda's cross in an unmarked position.

Alessandro Agostini then tried to get the home side on the scoresheet and managed to find a way past two defenders before he was stopped in his tracks by a perfectly-timed challenge from Daniele Ficagna.

Cagliari continued to have the better chances and a cross from the right by Andreas Cossu found Jeda, who powered his header just over the crossbar after 27 minutes.

Gianluca Curci was almost caught out moments later when Andrea Lazzari attempted a lob, but the Siena goalkeeper scrambled back to push the ball away.

Despite their positive start, the visitors were now struggling to contain their opponents and Curci made a fantastic save to keep out Jeda's close-range strike following Larrivey's corner.

The interval could not come soon enough for Siena, but when it did arrive the team which emerged from the dressing room at the end of the break could not have been more fired up.

It took them just seven minutes to break the deadlock through Calaio, who rose highest to meet an Abdelkader Ghezzal cross and head home from six yards out.

Cagliari were temporarily stunned by the blow, and were unable to muster any attempt at an equaliser for another 10 minutes, when Anderson Nene's weak shot was easily held by Curci.

Calaio could have grabbed a second for Siena after 67 minutes when a lapse in concentration from Diego Lopez allowed Massimo Maccarone to steal the ball.

But although the forward provided the perfect cross for his team-mate, Calaio failed to control the ball and fired well wide.

A bad few minutes almost got worse for Lopez when the Uruguayan defender made a mess of clearing a corner and almost turned the ball into his own net.

And Siena punished some more poor defending after 70 minutes when Calaio snuck between two static Cagliari players to head home his second goal of the evening.

The hosts were given a route back into the match six minutes later, though. Ghezzal was punished for a handball in the area and Jeda made no mistake from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit.

But Cagliari's hopes of a comeback were killed off for good two minutes from time, with substitute Reginaldo finding the bottom left corner with a powerful header.
