Albert Bunjaku pinched a point for Nurnberg with a second-half equaliser as Eintracht Frankfurt's winning run came to an end.
Frankfurt began their campaign with an emphatic victory over local rivals Kickers Offenbach in the first round of the DFB-Pokal and then gained an unexpected 3-2 triumph at Werder Bremen last weekend.
A third win in a row looked likely when Caio scored early on, but Bunjaku netted eight minutes after coming off the bench to thwart the hosts.
Caio grabbed the opener after 17 minutes when Ioannis Amanatidis launched a high ball into the penalty area and Alexander Meier headed the ball down for Brazilian Caio who drove the ball into the net from 10 yards.
Nurnberg, beaten by Schalke in the Bundesliga last weekend, came back strongly and Marek Mintal forced Oka Nikolov to make a decent save from his shot.
Frankfurt were not at their best but threatened a second goal in the 27th minute when Amanatidis shot wide from Caio's pass.
Caio then mis-controlled a pass from Meier inside the penalty area early in the second half, as a good chance went begging.
Nurnberg punished the home side when Greek striker Angelos Charisteas broke clear and fired a shot which goalkeeper Nikolov could only parry, allowing fellow substitute Bunjaku to score from close range.
Frankfurt could have won it still, but Amanatidis shot straight at Raphael Schafer from the edge of the penalty area.
And Nurnberg thought they had grabbed all three points when Bunjaku looked to have scored again with 11 minutes remaining, however an offside flag curtailed the celebrations.
