Karina Bryant claims silver for Great Britain at World Judo Championships

Great Britain's Karina Bryant has claimed a silver medal at the World Judo Championships in Rotterdam.

The 30 year-old, from Kingston-upon-Thames, lost in the final to Chinese fighter and reigning world champion Tong Wen in the above 78kg class after only making the 14-strong British team at the last minute.

Bryant, GB's only medallist, said: "I feel great. I had a good year because I did not expect to be here. I am very happy."

Cuba's Idalis Ortiz Boucurt and Maki Tsukada of Japan took bronze, but it was Tong who claimed the big prize, collecting world gold for the fifth consecutive time.

She said: "My goal was to defend my title, and I attacked in each match."
