Napoli 3-1 Livorno

Fabio Quagliarella's double enabled Napoli to pick up their first win of the season at the expense of Livorno.

The newly-promoted visitors, who sold striker Alessandro Diamanti to English Premier League side West Ham on Friday, battled gallantly at the San Paolo before Roberto Donadoni's men made sure of all three points.

Italian international striker Quagliarella was close to a hat-trick had his fifth minute effort from long range not struck the bar.

However, Quagliarella only had to wait five more minutes to get on the scoresheet, getting on the end of a long range Hugo Campagnaro shot to score.

Marek Hamsik set up Quagliarella again in the 19th minute, but his curling shot just failed to find the target, then four minutes later Campagnaro headed Christian Raimondi cross over the bar.

The visitors had to wait until the 35th minute for their first chance - and Cristiano Lucarelli should have done better when it came - but he headed over.

The miss proved costly as Napoli doubled their lead a minute later, with the highly-rated Hamsik beating defender Marcus Paxao before outwitting goalkeeper Alfonso De Lucia with a deft touch.

Lucarelli had two chances to level the scores before half-time, seeing a 39th-minute effort saved by Morgan De Sanctis, before again testing the goalkeeper with a curling free-kick a minute before the break.

However, three minutes into the second half Lucarelli was on the mark, heading in from close-range to bring his team back into the match, after De Sanctis had tipped Antonio Candreva's 30-yard shot onto the bar.

In the 52nd minute Ezequiel Lavezzi shot wide when he really should have made more of the opportunity, then 11 minutes later Christian Maggio headed Quagliarella's cross over the bar despite being in space.

De Sanctis preserved his side's advantage in the 66th minute when he saved from Lucarelli, while at the other end Hamsik wasted a great chance to make it 3-1, failing to convert Quagliarella's cross.

Candreva tested De Sanctis 11 minutes from time, with Tomas Danilevicius just failing to touch in the rebound.

However, Livorno's hopes were ended in the 83rd minute when Quagliarella netted from close range after Lavezzi had been denied.

And the visitors' misery was complete in injury-time when Mirko Pieri was dismissed, picking up a yellow card for a foul on Walter Gargano.

The result means the Azzurri are up to eighth in the table after their opening day defeat at Palermo, while the Tuscan side - who shared a goalless draw with Bologna on their return to the top flight - lie 16th.
