World Athletics: Usain Bolt on course for track double after cruising to 200m semis

Having cleared the sleep from his eyes with a gentle jog in the first round of the 200 metres on Tuesday morning, Usain Bolt returned for Tuesday night's second round with a spring in his step to suggest his recovery is now well underway after his heroics on Sunday night.

Ominously, the Jamaican enjoyed another excellent start, never previously the strongest part of his race, and was so far ahead of his rivals that he was able to shut down 80 metres from the finish, cantering over the line in 20.42sec.

His performance was in marked contrast to his first-round effort, which he preceded by closing his eyes and performing a mime to indicate that he would rather have been in bed than in his starting blocks at such an early hour.

His torpor continued after the starting gun as he sauntered round the bend before suddenly realising that there was still work to do and finding a new gear.

"I think the 100 took a lot more out of me than it did in Beijing," he said afterwards. "I've said that I wasn't in the best of shape compared to Beijing but if I can get another good night's sleep I should be OK."

Britain's Marlon Devonish joined him in Wedesday's semi-finals in a time of 20.66sec.
