The game between Charlton Athletic and Brentford at the Valley Stadium on Sep 5, 2009.
Charlton’s best ever start to a League campaign continued in the late summer sunshine of South East London when they claimed their sixth straight win to remain at the top of League One.
Relegated from the Championship last season, Charlton have responded impressively and with a team unchanged for each of their six games, they won comfortably thanks to first half goals from Deon Burton and Lloyd Sam.
The 4-0 win at Tranmere last week allowed Charlton to claim the best start in the club’s 104-year history and they extended the run in impressive fashion.
Charlton are brimming with confidence and it took just 11 minutes to open the scoring and again Sam was involved.
A long ball from the Charlton half should have been cleared by Sam Wood, but the Brentford left-back hesitated, allowing Sam to present an easy opportunity for Burton.
The much-travelled Jamaican international then had the simple chance of side-footing the ball beyond Brentford’s Welsh international goalkeeper Lewis Price, to claim his third goal in five games for Charlton this season.
Brentford had to wait until the 28th minute to respond, but after Danny Foster pulled the ball back from the by-line, Charlton cleared the ball for a corner, though the visitors had legitimate claims for a penalty after the ball bounced off the arm of Nicky Bailey.
But Charlton added a second goal after half an hour and this time Sam got the goal his athletic display deserved. Jonjo Shelvey fed the ball in, Burton flicked it on and Sam finished delightfully for his third goal in two games.
Brentford, who started the day in sixth place, hinted at times of threatening to score but Charlton were quicker, their passing more accurate.
Myles Weston, once of Charlton, wasted a chance to give Brentford a fighting chance, his half volley flying over from 10 yards.
Brentford were denied a goal they deserved when, in the 73rd minute, Carl Cort’s header was superbly saved by Charlton goalkeeper Rob Elliot. And before the end David Hunt struck the Charlton cross-bar from a free-kick.
