Chievo 3-1 Genoa

Chievo shattered Genoa's 100% start to the new Serie A campaign with in Verona.

After three successive wins which yielded eight goals, the Grifoni were hoping to maintain their healthy position at the top of the table - but two goals in the first seven minutes proved their undoing.

The Flying Donkeys flew out of the blocks, taking control of the game after Genoa's Giandomenico Mesto had the first chance of the game in the second minute with a long-range free-kick which went wide.

The home side went ahead from the penalty spot after a fourth-minute foul on Erjon Bogdani by Giuseppe Biava - and Michele Marcolini gave goalkeeper Marco Amelia no chance with a shot into the corner.

Within two minutes Chievo had doubled their advantage when the lively Bogdani tapped in right-footed following a pass from Luciano.

In the 18th minute Luciano missed a great chance to put the Gialloblu 3-0 ahead when his weak shot from close range was easily caught by Amelia.

Genoa threatened just past the half-hour mark when Omar Milanetto's free-kick found Salvatore Bocchetti, but he headed wide from eight yards.

In the 37th minute the visitors wasted another chance when Sergio Floccari's header from close range missed the target, following a Nenad Tomovic corner.

And two minutes before half-time goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino preserved the home team's two-goal advantage when he kept out Floccari's header from Mesto's corner.

The last chance of the first half went to Marcolini, whose 30-yard free-kick was well saved low down by Amelia.

Three minutes into the second half Chievo midfielder Giampiero Pinzi saw his close-range effort blocked by Amelia, before Bocchetti helped out his goalkeeper by clearing the ball from the goal line.

Sorrentino saved Giuseppe Sculli's right foot shot from 10 yards just before the hour, before Genoa threw themselves a lifeline with a 65th-minute goal.

Mario Yepes handled the ball inside his own penalty area and Floccari gave Sorrentino no chance with the spot-kick with a low shot into the corner of the net.

In the 74th minute Bocchetti's long-range effort was kept out by Sorrentino - and two minutes later Chievo restored their two-goal advantage.

Pinzi's deep cross was headed on by Pablo Granoche to Sergio Pellissier, who scored with his head from close range.

Colombian Yepes tested Amelia with a header in the closing minutes, before Genoa won a penalty two minutes into injury-time when Luciano was ruled to have pushed Sculli inside the penalty area.

However, Sorrentino made a great save to keep out Floccari's penalty and make sure the points were the home side's.
