A-League Sunday Review

Sydney moved alongside Gold Coast United at the top of the A-League table today after edging Newcastle Jets 2-1 at Sydney Football Stadium.

Mark Bridge opened the scoring for the hosts in the 26th minute when he picked up the ball just inside the Jets area and broke towards goal before unleashing a fine effort beyond goalkeeper Ben Kennedy.

The Jets restored parity, however, 11 minutes later when Matthew Thompson pounced after goalkeeper Clint Bolton had parried Kaz Patafta's drive back into the danger zone.

But Sydney regained the lead in the 55th minute after Kennedy had brought down Alex Brosque inside the area and Steve Corica fired home the resulting penalty.

The Jets rallied late on but could not find an equaliser and their misery was complete in stoppage time when Tarek Elrich was sent off for a dangerous tackle.

"Today all players showed (the) right, strong, tough character," said Sydney coach Vitezslav Lavicka.

Elsewhere, Perth Glory stormed up to fourth in the league with a thrilling 4-2 win at Brisbane Roar.

The Glory took the lead with less than a minute gone when Josh McCloughan compounded to put the ball into his own net.

Wayne Srhoj then made it 2-0 with a goal four minutes before half-time but Brisbane battled back after the break as Henrique's 50th-minute strike halved the deficit.

Branko Jelic made it 3-1 shortly after the hour mark but again Brisbane fought back as Sergio van Dijk struck in the 64th minute.

But Adriano Pellegrino ensured the three points went Glory's way when he scored his side's fourth with 16 minutes remaining.

Finally, a 94th-minute strike from Chris Grossman rescued a point for North Queensland Fury as they drew 1-1 at Wellington Phoenix.

Leo Bertos had put the hosts ahead in the sixth minute when he latched on to a pass from Andrew Durante before coolly firing home.

It looked as though the Phoenix had done enough to take all three points but their hearts were broken when Robbie Fowler's free-kick deep in injury time fell for substitute Grossman inside the area and he sent a low shot into the back of the net.

Phoenix are ninth in the 10-team league with just one win so far this season while Fury are one place and one point below at the bottom of the standings.
