Ferrero closes in on title hat-trick

Juan Carlos Ferrero moved a step closer to a hat-trick of ATP Tour titles after reaching the final of the the Abierto Mexicano Telcel tournament in Acapulco.

The former world number one has been victorious in Costa do Sauipe and Buenos Aires in the past fortnight and will play in a third consecutive final after Juan Monaco retired from their semi-final with an abdominal strain.

Ferrero, who will meet David Ferrer in an all-Spanish final, had won the opening set 7-5 when Monaco called an end to the match after calling for the trainer.

"I didn't see he was having problem until he called the trainer," said Ferrero, who has now won 14 consecutive matches on the Latin-American clay-court swing.

"I didn't play very well in the beginning but little by little I was putting myself back in the match. I feel bad for Juan - he's a good friend of mine and I hope he can recover fast."

David Ferrer fought back from a set down to beat second-seeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez 6-7 (7/4) 6-0 6-4 in a match that lasted two hours and 16 minutes.

The third seed converted five of 10 break-point chances after losing the opening set in a tie-break to progress.
