Napoli dropped out of the top four as they failed to find a way past Serie A basement boys Siena.
German Denis missed perhaps the best chance of the game for the visitors in the first half after a neat one-two between Marek Hamsik and Luca Cigarini had set him up.
Massimo Maccarone threatened sporadically on his return from suspension for Siena, who made it two games unbeaten following their 1-0 win at Chievo last time out. They still look odds on to be playing second-tier football next term, though, lying eight points from safety.
Napoli's third goalless draw in their last four games - and their fourth without a win - saw them slip to fifth, a point behind Juventus
Napoli, who were held by leaders Inter Milan in their last game despite twice hitting the woodwork, carved out the game's first chance in the second minute when Denis' cross from the right found Cristian Maggio, whose header went wide.
Maccarone then shot wide of the left post at the end of a move involving Cristiano Del Grosso and Alexandros Tziolis.
The former Middlesbrough man, Siena's top-scorer this season, was involved again in the 18th minute, but, after running 60 yards to play his part in a swift Siena counter-attack, could only fire off target from 25 yards.
At the other end Denis took a pass from Hamsik and beat Emilson Sanchez Cribari before shooting over the top.
The Napoli striker should have put his side in front in the 33rd minute when fine interplay between Hamsik and Cigarini gave him a chance from close in, but the Argentinian could not capitalise.
Siena's Tziolis and Denis had headers comfortably saved either side of half-time before Maccarone passed up the hosts' best chance of the game, failing to get a telling touch on Reginaldo's low cross.
Hamsik tried his luck from 35 yards only to see his left-footed attempt fly over the bar, while Aleandro Rosi went closer from the edge of the area for Siena, his effort grazing the left post.
Napoli were now being restricted to long-range shots as they struggled to find a way through their opponents' resolute defence.
Substitute Ezequiel Lavezzi shot over from 20 yards before another replacement, Austria international Erwin Hoffer, saw his effort from distance skim the bar.
And the visitors were almost gifted the points in the 90th minute as Francesco Pratali came close to heading Salvatore Aronica's cross into his own net, the ball going just past the top right corner and sparing the defender's blushes.
