Sprinter Robbie Hunter from the Garmin–Transitions team has won the first stage of the Tour of Murcia.
The rider took line honours from Australia’s Graeme Brown and Spain’s Vicente Reyne in a bunch finish as Lance Armstrong and Bradley Wiggins sat comfortably in the pack ahead of a much sterner test on Thursday.
Stage two runs from Calasparra to Caravaca in south east Spain and includes two ascents of the category 1 Alto de San Juan, standing at a vertiginous 1227m.
The terrain becomes more difficult with a another demanding hilly day on Friday and a pancake flat 22km time-trial on Saturday before a relatively straightforward stage on Sunday.
Both Armstrong and Wiggins will fancy their chances of placing high in the GC as they start building towards the Tour de France in summer.
