Coupe de France Wednesday Review

Brest upset the odds to clinch a place in the last 16 of the Coupe de France at the expense of Toulouse.

Substitute Romain Poyet broke the deadlock for Brest after 74 minutes, 10 minutes after being introduced to the action, and a Richard Socrier penalty three minutes from time sealed victory for the visitors.

Brest will travel to Lens in the next round after Jean-Guy Wallemme's troops advanced with a 3-1 home win over Marseille.

Issam Jemaa's first-half double set the northern club on their way and Toifilou Maoulida put the result beyond doubt with the third goal 12 minutes after the restart. Benoit Cheyrou pulled one back for Didier Deschamps' side four minutes later but it was merely a consolation.

The other Coupe de France matches this evening were last-16 encounters.

Bordeaux's miserable week continued as they were dumped out 2-0 on their own turf by Monaco.

The French champions, beaten 4-2 by Rennes on Saturday, went down to a goal in each half from Djimi Traore and Moussa Maazou.

Plabennec's cup adventure was finally ended with a thumping 4-0 defeat at Auxerre.

The third-tier club, who ousted Ligue 1 sides Nice and Nancy in the previous two rounds, met their match in Jean Fernandez's side tonight as an Ireneusz Jelen hat-trick powered the hosts into the last eight. Benoit Pedretti was also on target.

St Etienne were made to work hard to get past Ligue 2 Vannes OC but late goals from Dimitri Payet and Emmanuel Riviere saw Les Verts progress.

Boulogne, Sochaux, Quevilly and Paris St Germain all booked their places in the quarter-finals last night.

Coupe de France Wednesday Review

Villefranche came close to a place in the last 16 of the Coupe de France before being knocked out on penalties by St Etienne.

The CFA Group B side were playing Ligue 1 opposition for the first time in their history and twice equalised after going behind to the visitors.

Gonzalo Bergessio (10) and Bakary Sako (85) scored for St Etienne with Bruno Barreto grabbing Villefranche's first and Bernard Lopez forcing extra-time in the 90th minute.

But their nerve failed them in the shootout as only Lopez scored from the spot as they went down 3-1.

Sochaux had a simpler time in booking their place in the next round, easing past Le Mans 3-0.

Ryad Boudebouz opened the scoring with a first-half penalty before a Ideye Brown double sealed it.

Rennes through to Cup quarters

Rennes stormed into the last 16 of the Coupe de France on Friday evening with a thumping 4-0 victory at Saumur.

Sylvain Marveaux and Moussa Sow each bagged a brace for the Ligue 1 side in the convincing 10th-round triumph.

The impressive Marveaux opened the scoring five minutes before half-time and, although the fifth-tier outfit stood firm for much of the second half, three goals in the last 10 minutes sealed the visitors' win.

Sow doubled their advantage in the 82nd minute, Marveaux made it 3-0 five minutes later and then Sow rounded things off from the penalty spot in the last minute.

Coupe de France Review

Ligue 1 side Nice became the first top-flight team to crash out of the Coupe de France to lower-league opponents as they slipped up against Plabennec.

Plabennec are making hard work of life in France's third tier but pulled off a huge shock as two goals from captain Jean-Michel Abiven rendered Loic Remy's opener academic.

Holders Guingamp saw off minnows Bonchamp 2-0 with Mathieu Scarpelli and Moustapha Diallo on the scoresheet.

Trelissac were no match for Marseille, as Hatem Ben Arfa and Bruno Cheyrou both netted to secure a 2-0 victory.

Ligue 2 Angers are also in the hat for the last 32 after a 1-0 win away to AS Lattes, while Versailles were beaten 3-0 by Beauvais.
