Shahar Peer powers on in Hungary

Israeli number one Shahar Peer caused an upset in the GDF Suez Grand Prix in Budapest.

She hammered second seed and defending champion Alize Cornet to move into the quarter-finals.

Peer, seeking her fourth WTA Tour title, breezed to a 6-2 6-0 win and will next play Ukrainian sixth seed Alona Bondarenko, who continued her progress with a tight 6-4 4-6 6-4 win over Ioana Olaru.

Peer's win was not the only shock as third seed Sybille Bammer was beaten 4-6 7-5 6-2 by Edina Gallovits. Croatian qualifier Petra Martic continued her fine form with a 6-3 6-2 win over Mariya Koryttseva.

In delayed first round action, top seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland started her campaign with a comfortable 7-6 6-3 win over Andrea Petkovic.
