Simple for Gilles Simon

Gilles Simon eased into the second round of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart but Tomas Berdych fell at the first hurdle.

France's Simon, the world number seven, defeated Philipp Petzschner 6-3 6-4 but Berdych, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, was dumped out 6-3 6-3 by talented German Nicolas Kiefer.

There was more success for the hosts with fifth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber beating Diego Junqueira 6-3 6-2, Rainer Schuettler knocking out Ivo Minar 2-6 7-6 (7/2) 6-4 and Mischa Zverev claiming a 6-2 6-4 win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

In an all-German clash between Simon Greul and Andreas Beck it was the former who came out on top, triumphing 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (7/5).

Two other seeds were sent packing with veteran Fabrice Santoro, the seventh seed, losing 5-7 7-6 (7/3) 6-1 to Fabio Fognini and Jeremy Chardy beating eighth seed Jose Acasuso 6-2 7-6 (7/4).

Lucky loser Alexandre Sidorenko and Spain's Oscar Hernandez also made it through.
