Cubs move back in front

The Chicago Cubs moved a game clear at the top of the National League Central division after a 12-3 defeat of Houston Astros.

The Cubs, convincing conquerors of the Astros yesterday, erupted for 12 runs for the second consecutive afternoon.

The top two hitters in the order, lead-off man Kosuke Fukudome and number two Ryan Theriot, each drove home four runs to set up the success.

Astros veteran right-hander Russ Ortiz continues to struggle, going for nine runs in just 2 1/3 innings in the series finale.

St Louis fell a game behind the Cubs as a result of the 5-3 setback against West division leaders the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Matt Kemp hit a two-run single in the 10th inning for his third hit as the Dodgers ended a season-worst four-game losing streak.

Milwaukee picked up consecutive wins for the first time in a month with a 7-3 defeat of hapless Washington Nationals.

Ryan Zimmerman's three-run homer gave the Nats a brief lead in the top of the fourth inning, but with the game tied in the seventh the decisive run came when Jason Kendall hit a grounder and Mike Cameron slid under the tag to break the tie.

A five-run second inning which began with five consecutive hits helped the New York Mets record a fifth straight victory.

Johan Santana, who fanned eight over seven scoreless innings, impressed at Citi Field as Colorado were beaten 11-4.

Rockies starter Jason Hammel endured the shortest outing of his career when he allowed five runs on seven hits in just 1 1/3 innings.

San Diego clinched their first series since June with a 7-4 success at the expense of Cincinnati, Tim Stauffer limiting the Reds to one run over seven innings while Will Venable went 4-for-5 with four RBIs.

In the East division, Brian McCann's three-run homer in the 10th inning gave the Atlanta Braves a 6-3 victory over Florida Marlins which keeps alive their hopes of an NL wild card.

Pablo Sandoval hit a home run and collected four RBI to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 7-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.
